English Language Proficiency Tests
Prospective students whose native language is not English and who have not earned a degree from an appropriately accredited institution where English is the principal language of instruction must demonstrate college-level proficiency in English through one of the documents below for admission. Proficiency may be demonstrated by submission of an acceptable Test of English as a Foreign Language, Test of English for International Communication, International English Language Test or proof that the language of instruction for the secondary or postsecondary credentialing institution was English. Transcript evaluations may be completed on unofficial transcripts; however, official documentation must be received and verified before admission is granted and applicants may enroll.
Or if the prospective students whose native language is not English and who have not earned a degree from an appropriately accredited institution where English is the principal language of instruction must demonstrate college-level proficiency in English through the document below for admission: A transcript indicating completion of at least 30 semester credit hours with an average grade of “C” or higher at an institution accredited by an agency recognized by the United States Secretary of Education and/or the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA), or accepted foreign equivalent that is listed in the International Handbook of Universities where the language of instruction was English. A “B” or higher is required for master’s degree, first professional degree, or professional doctoral degree.
Undergraduate
A minimum total score of 57 on the paper-delivered Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL PBT), or 61 on the Internet Based Test (iBT); 6.0 on the International English Language Test (IELTS); 44 on the Pearson Test of English Academic Score Report; 95 on the Duolingo English Test; or 53 on the 4-skill Michigan English Test (MET), or 650/LP on the Michigan Examination for the Certificate of Competency in English (ECCE), or 650/LP on the Michigan Examination for the Certificate of Proficiency in English (ECPE). A high school diploma completed at an accredited/recognized high school (where the medium of instruction is English.)
Graduate
A minimum total score of 60 on the paper-delivered Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL PBT, or 71 on the Internet Based Test (iBT); 6.5 on the International English Language Test (IELTS); 50 on the Pearson Test of English Academic Score Report; 100 on the Duolingo English Test; or 55 on the 4-skill Michigan English Test (MET), or 650/LP on the Michigan Examination for the Certificate of Competency in English (EDDE), or 650/ LP on the Michigan Examination for the Certificate of Proficiency in English (ECPE).
Tests Accepted
The TOEFL program has phased in the Internet-based version of the TOEFL test – TOEFL iBT. If you take the TOEFL iBT, you must score 61 or higher to gain admission to the University. The TOEFL iBT measures how well you read, listen, speak and write in English, and use these skills together.
The paper-based TOEFL test measures: Listening Comprehension, Structure and Written Expression, and Reading Comprehension. A minimum score of 500 on the paper-based version is required for admission to the University.
In lieu of the TOEFL, you may submit scores from the Test of English for International Communication (TOEIC). A minimum score of 750 is required for admission to the University. Complete information on the TOEIC is available at www.toeic.com.
